  5.     For many years, John Cairncross, 76, has lived quietly in
  6. Italy and France. But his retirement was rudely interrupted
  7. last week when he was named the mysterious "fifth man" in
  8. Britain's most famous spy case.
  9.  
  10.     Cairncross's accuser is Oleg Gordievsky, who defected from
  11. the Soviet KGB in 1985 and is co-author of the new book KGB:
  12. The Inside Story. In addition to revealing in a TIME excerpt
  13. last week that President Franklin Roosevelt's key aide, Harry
  14. Hopkins, was an unwitting accomplice of the KGB, Gordievsky
  15. contends that Cairncross was a member of a spy ring that
  16. included Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean, Kim Philby and Anthony
  17. Blunt. Though Cairncross was ousted from a sensitive government
  18. post in 1951 for allegedly passing documents to the Soviets,
  19. his spy connection was never proved. Last week he continued to
  20. deny that he is the missing link. But British intelligence
  21. sources back up Gordievsky's story.
